Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs Signs Key Executive Order Limiting Conversion Therapy

DELRAY BEACH, FL- Truth Wins Out praised Michigan for passing a bill to prohibit the destructive and ineffective practice of “ex-gay” conversion therapy for minors. The Michigan Senate voted 21-15 – with only one Republican crossing the aisle to vote with Democrats. The House already passed the bill, so it now heads to the desk of Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for signing. Whitmer previously called the quack treatment a “dangerous practice.”
Michigan becomes the 22nd state to prohibit conversion therapy, although loopholes remain for religious counselors who try to “pray away the gay”. It is also permissible to harm adults with conversion snake oil.
“We applaud Michigan for using Pride Month to eliminate prejudice,” said Wayne Besen, Executive Director of Truth Wins Out. “Conversion therapy is rejected by every mainstream medical and mental health association and has left a long trail of survivors who tell horror stories about conversion efforts. Most leaders of conversion therapy eventually come out of the closet as LGBTQ and warn people not to enter such programs.”
Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs also issued an executive order Tuesday that prohibits state agencies from using funds to promote or facilitate conversion therapy. We appreciate the initiative by Gov. Hobbs to protect the LGBTQ population in Arizona.
