Our Nation Could Unravel As Mad King Operates Without Constraints
Unless Donald Trump is removed from office, America’s great democratic experiment may collapse. The president is on track to destabilize the economy, destroy any semblance of national unity, and break the world order.
Our status as a global superpower is already in tatters, with countries, friend and foe alike, contemplating an America-free future. They are frantically rearming, making new military and economic alliances, and plotting how to “quiet quit” our growing international menace.
By this point, everyone who isn’t ensnared in the MAGA cult understands that our Mad King is operating without meaningful constraints, making 2026 our nation’s most precarious year since 1861, when a bloody civil war tore America asunder. We will only escape catastrophe through a fortuitous combination of dumb luck and grit—with millions of Americans refusing to let their beloved country slide into dictatorship.
While we are still technically a democracy, no honest person can say we are the same stable nation that we were under Joe Biden. In twelve months, government expertise has been hollowed, the armed forces recast as a plundering pirate armada, our lead in science has been sidelined, public health undermined, economic institutions subverted, climate change is rapidly intensifying, and we are now experiencing the civic deformity of a belligerent, masked police force terrorizing American cities, under the guise of keeping us safe.
Even in the best of times, President Trump is a malignant narcissist with sociopathic tendencies. His more benign pathologies include erecting monuments to himself such as his high-priced vanity ballroom or disfiguring the Kennedy Center by inserting his name.
Unfortunately, the overthrow of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro has amplified and infused President Trump’s mental illness with a messianic zeal. It is similar to the way he and his supporters reacted after he survived an assassination attempt while campaigning in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Post-Maduro, there is nothing this sick man believes he can’t accomplish—and he is surrounded by carefully selected bootlicking toadies who tell him that every brain fart is a brilliant idea that must be vigorously acted upon. When such egomania is combined with age-related cognitive decline, what we are left with is a volatile, loaded weapon aimed squarely at the heart of American democracy and global stability.
Trump’s alarming interview with the New York Times confirmed our worst fears. Times’ journalist Katie Rogers asked the president, “Do you see any checks on your power on the world stage? Is there anything that could stop you if you wanted to?”
Trump responded, “Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me, and that’s very good.” If America is exclusively guided by Trump’s “morality”, our three possible destinations in 2026 are the toilet, the gutter or the sewer. I don’t see how this ends well.
The Times’ Zolan Kanno-Youngs, followed up by asking, “Not international law?” The President replied, “I don’t need international law.” What he’s implying is that he is dismantling an international system that made America the most powerful nation on earth. We had alliances that greatly magnified our power and tilted the globe in favor of U.S. interests. Trump is heedlessly throwing decades of such political capital into the trash, with no clue of what this new world will mean for our future.
In its place is a cruel mafia state that rules through force. This paradigm reminds me of a middle school bully who used to taunt classmates with his menacing catchphrase, “my fist is my army”.
Now, Trump’s arrogant, emboldened fist is shaking furiously at our ally and NATO partner Greenland, as well as its overseer, Denmark. Rogers asked Trump, “If you had to choose between obtaining Greenland and preserving NATO, what’s your higher priority there?” Tragically, Trump made his willingness to carry our Russian President Vladimir Putin’s dream of dissolving NATO a potential reality. “Well, I don’t want to say that to you, but it may be a choice.”
In the interview, Trump expanded upon his threat to invade and annex Greenland. “Really it is, to me, it’s ownership. Ownership is very important…Because that’s what I feel is psychologically needed for success. I think that ownership gives you a thing that you can’t do, whether you’re talking about a lease or a treaty. Ownership gives you things and elements that you can’t get from just signing a document, that you can have a base.”
Unfortunately, Europe is doing what Europe always does—which is groveling and appeasement. NATO countries should stop humiliating themselves and vocally make it clear that they are willing to use military force to challenge an American invasion. They should also threaten draconian sanctions that would amount to a total end to transatlantic trade, in an effort to isolate a rogue America.
This would force Trump to contemplate dead American soldiers and an economic meltdown that would crash the stock market. If Europe has any self-respect, they must play hardball. Every previous attempt to assuage this lunatic with diplomacy has been met with mocking scorn and an escalation in abusive behavior.
Of course, this absurd spat with our allies, and the breakdown of international law, substantially increases the likelihood that China will attack Taiwan in 2026. It also weakens Ukraine’s efforts to hold off Russia—allowing Putin to threaten invasion of Finland, Poland, and the Baltic nations. Trump’s reckless actions have made the world significantly more dangerous, and he has exponentially increased scenarios for World War III. If we make it through the year without a global conflagration, we should count our blessings.
Meanwhile, on the domestic front, Trump seems hellbent on fomenting civil strife, if not civil war. His swaggering ICE squad has invaded American cities with undercurrents of violence. In Minneapolis, these goons murdered Renee Nicole Good, a poet and 37-year-old mother of three.
Instead of an unbiased investigation in conjunction with local authorities, US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem ridiculously said Good had been “stalking and impeding their work” all day by “blocking them in” with her car and “shouting at them”. Good “weaponized her vehicle,” and then tried to run over one of the officers “in an attempt to kill or cause bodily harm to agents, an act of domestic terrorism”. Vice President JD Vance piped in and called the incident “classic terrorism.”
We all saw video of the murder and know our agencies are aggressively gaslighting us with transparent lies. Vance and Noem’s angry gang of thugs apparently have free rein to snuff out any person who protests ICE, if they don’t bow down to their barked orders.
If that weren’t disturbing enough, such brazenly fascistic actions appear even more justifiable to MAGA if the victim happens to be a lesbian like Good—who the ICE shooter smeared as a “fucking bitch”, after emptying his pistol into her head.
Matt Walsh, the popular right-wing podcaster, wrote, “This lesbian agitator gave her life to protect 68 IQ Somali scammers who couldn’t give less of a shit about her. The most disgraceful and humiliating end a person could possibly meet.”
Homophobia as a rationalization for state-sponsored-terror was rife on the right, with one vile Tweet spewing out after another. It’s clear that if these detestable monsters fully overthrow America, the country will be a dangerous, life-threatening place to live for LGBTQ people, as well as anyone who doesn’t adhere to the right wing’s narrow cult of conformity.
Today, the Department of Homeland Security defended its deadly actions with Orwellian propaganda worthy of Nazi Germany or North Korea. On X, they wrote:
“Defend the Homeland. Protect the American way of life. The nonstop lies and smears from the FAKE NEWS are meant to tear down our brave men and women who protect our homeland every day.”
What country are we living in? As I recently wrote, MAGA is a liberation movement for reprobates, sadists, and predators, who hide behind God and country to mask their malevolence.
Of all the arenas in which Trump is creating chaos and anarchy, his war against America’s economy could do the most damage. The president initially set off alarm bells with his failed tariffs. When unpleasant economic statistics came in, he fired Erika McEntarfer, the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Today, the administration launched a criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, because he won’t kowtow to Trump’s irrational demand to lower interest rates to almost zero. Trump is expected to try to replace Powell with his top economic advisor, Kevin A. Hassett, bringing quackery into the economy.
If Trump replaces reliable statistics with economic voodoo, unleashes the DOJ on Fed commissioners who won’t take his orders, and puts lackeys in charge of Wall Street—a massive recession, or even a new Great Depression, is almost inevitable. The markets can only operate for so long on magical thinking and fantasy. Global investors will pull out of America and look for more reliable countries they can trust. In the end, we will all be massively poorer as a result of Trump’s market manipulations.
Here is the hard truth. Americans can no longer depend on Congress to protect us. Trump owns the Supreme Court and has stuffed the appellate courts with cult-like cronies, many of whom are auditioning for future Supreme Court seats. The New York Times found:
Trump’s nominees sided with him consistently across all three kinds of rulings, voting in his favor 97 percent of the time on administrative stays, 88 percent of the time on stays pending appeal, and 100 percent of the time on final rulings.
Whether America disintegrates into a volatile hellscape will depend on whether Trump accepts defeat in the midterms. His New York Times interview didn’t bode well. The president delusionally claimed that in Minnesota, “the elections are corrupt as hell because I won that election three times.” He asserted that in his loss to Biden, “the election was totally rigged, and it’s come out very loudly, but it’s coming out more and more every day.”
This is a portrait of an unrepentant despot who will claim any election he doesn’t win was stolen. If he won’t concede midterm defeat, all hell could break lose. Millions of Americans would likely flood the streets in protest. They would certainly be met by ICE and other paramilitary forces, who treat protesters as “domestic terrorists”. Trump has repeatedly dehumanized Democrats as “scum”.
The secession of blue states is also possible—which would likely descend into even more violence. The second bleak possibility would be public acquiesce in the face of brutal state sponsored repression. I’m not sure which is worse, America on fire, or our nation meekly retreating to become an unfree, Trump-led police state, essentially morphing into New Russia.
Maybe, we get lucky and Trump is prematurely called home. Perhaps, his MAGA agenda becomes so unpopular that even his blind adherents can finally see through Trump’s facade? It’s possible that the president’s foreign adventures or economic mismanagement finally wakes up enough congressional Republicans to stop him.
If none of these Hail Mary safeguards save the day, we are faced with an emboldened madman, who has a mushrooming messiah complex and an itchy trigger finger. This year promises to be a wild ride with no seat belt or brakes. Brace yourself, because anything is possible.
