Truth Wins Out’s Statement on Trump’s Victory
The political apocalypse has occurred, and our worst nightmare has been realized. Our country chose fascism over freedom. America willingly selected national suicide and international disorder.
The Trump campaign was premised on a risky bet. It wagered that Americans are secretly as vicious, vulgar and vile as Trump himself. It believed Trump is a truth teller who has unshackled the pent-up masses to shed “political correctness” in favor of their genuine ugly selves. On November 5, we learned Trump’s dark, dystopian hypothesis of the American psyche was correct.
The LGBTQ movement now moves forward in uncharted waters. We have achieved great advances in liberal democracy. Now what?
We can say we will fight, but what does it mean to advocate in a country if freedom of speech and assembly are challenged? What does it mean if our peaceful protests are met with police batons or bullets? These are scenarios we never thought we’d have to contemplate. Now we do.
America is about to go through some things. Our actions will reverberate internationally in terrible and unpredictable ways. The LGBTQ community will be at the epicenter of attacks, as well as the forefront of defending freedom and democracy.
A best-case scenario is Trump is lazy and prefers golfing to governing. He screws over his base and doesn’t follow through on his demented campaign promises. But this is the least likely scenario.
Today, everything changes for the LGBTQ movement and our country. Truth Wins Out will fight harder than ever to preserve our gains—whatever that means in our crazy new reality.
