Gruesomeness of murder is reminiscent of Matthew Shepard’s Death

MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA — Truth Wins Out is devastated and outraged by the brutal murder of 32-year-old trans woman and activist Sara Millerey González in Bello, Antioquia, Colombia. Her death is a harrowing reminder of the systemic violence and transphobia that continue to plague societies worldwide.

On April 4, Sara was reportedly assaulted, her arms and legs broken, and her body thrown into the La García stream. Passersby allegedly filmed her final moments as she struggled in the water, with the footage later surfacing on social media. Despite being rescued and taken to a hospital, Sara succumbed to her injuries on April 5. Truth Wins Out will attend a demonstration tonight in Bello demanding justice for Sara Millerey González.
“This sadistic murder cannot go unpunished, and the authorities must conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, ensuring those responsible are held accountable,” said Truth Wins Out’s Communications Director Andres Echavarria, who is based in Medellin. “Sara Millerey’s murder is not an isolated incident but a manifestation of deep-seated transphobia and societal indifference. The cruelty she endured reflects a broader pattern of violence against transgender individuals. We stand in solidarity with Sara’s family, friends, and the LGBTQ community in Colombia, demanding swift justice and systemic change.”
The wanton cruelty of this incident is reminiscent of Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old gay man who was murdered in Wyoming. Shepard’s 1998 death ignited protests nationwide and drew attention in the United States to anti-LGBTQ hate crimes. Shepard was beaten, and tortured by two men, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, near Laramie, Wyoming. Shepard was tied to a fence in a remote, rural area, and left to die. He was discovered about 18 hours later by a cyclist who initially mistook him for a scarecrow.
In Colombia, President Gustavo Petro condemned the attack, stating, “What happened in Bello is fascism. Fascism is the violent erasure of human difference—be it political, religious, ethnic, or sexual. There are Nazis in Colombia”.
Bello’s mayor, Lorena González Ospina, expressed profound sorrow and called for justice: “Sara was attacked with unimaginable cruelty. What’s just as painful is the silence of those who stood by. We have a responsibility to protect the LGBTQ+ community. We cannot keep letting transphobia destroy lives.”
In response to the murder, local authorities have initiated a special investigation and offered a reward of 50 million pesos (approximately $11,000 USD) for information leading to an arrest .
According to Colombia Diversa, at least 63 LGBTQ+ individuals were killed in Colombia in 2023, with trans women facing the highest levels of targeted violence.
“Sara’s life and tragic death must serve as a catalyst for action against transphobia and violence,” said TWO’s Echavarria. “Her memory compels us to work tirelessly for a world where every individual, regardless of gender identity, can live with dignity and safety.”

La crueldad del crimen recuerda la muerte de Matthew Shepard
MEDELLÍN, COLOMBIA — Truth Wins Out expresa su profunda conmoción e indignación ante el brutal asesinato de Sara Millerey González, mujer trans y activista de 32 años, ocurrido en Bello, Antioquia, Colombia. Su muerte constituye un recordatorio estremecedor de la violencia sistémica y la transfobia que persisten en sociedades alrededor del mundo.
El pasado 4 de abril, Sara fue golpeada, sufrió fracturas en brazos y piernas, y luego fue arrojada al caño La García. Testigos presenciales habrían grabado en video sus últimos momentos mientras luchaba en el agua, imágenes que posteriormente circularon en redes sociales. Aunque fue rescatada y llevada al hospital, Sara falleció a causa de sus heridas el 5 de abril. Truth Wins Out asistirá esta noche a una manifestación en Bello exigiendo justicia para Sara Millerey González.
«Este asesinato sádico no puede quedar impune. Las autoridades deben realizar una investigación exhaustiva y transparente para garantizar que los responsables sean llevados ante la justicia», dijo Andrés Echavarría, director de Comunicaciones de Truth Wins Out, basado en Medellín. «El asesinato de Sara Millerey no es un caso aislado, sino una manifestación de la profunda transfobia e indiferencia social. La crueldad que sufrió refleja un patrón más amplio de violencia contra personas transgénero. Nos solidarizamos con la familia y amigos de Sara, así como con la comunidad LGBTQ en Colombia, exigiendo justicia inmediata y cambios sistémicos».
La crueldad desenfrenada de este incidente recuerda el asesinato de Matthew Shepard, joven gay de 21 años asesinado en Wyoming en 1998. La muerte de Shepard generó protestas en todo Estados Unidos y visibilizó los crímenes de odio contra personas LGBTQ. Shepard fue golpeado y torturado por Aaron McKinney y Russell Henderson cerca de Laramie, Wyoming. Luego fue atado a una cerca en una zona rural y dejado allí para morir. Fue encontrado unas 18 horas después por un ciclista que inicialmente pensó que era un espantapájaros.
En Colombia, el presidente Gustavo Petro condenó el ataque diciendo: «Lo ocurrido en Bello es fascismo. El fascismo es el borrado violento de la diferencia humana—sea política, religiosa, étnica o sexual. Hay nazis en Colombia».
La alcaldesa de Bello, Lorena González Ospina, expresó profundo dolor y pidió justicia: «Sara fue atacada con una crueldad inimaginable. Lo igualmente doloroso es el silencio de quienes presenciaron el hecho. Tenemos la responsabilidad de proteger a la comunidad LGBTQ+. No podemos seguir permitiendo que la transfobia destruya vidas».
En respuesta al asesinato, las autoridades locales iniciaron una investigación especial y ofrecen una recompensa de 50 millones de pesos (aproximadamente $11,000 USD) por información que conduzca a la captura de los responsables.
Según Colombia Diversa, al menos 63 personas LGBTQ+ fueron asesinadas en Colombia durante el año 2023, siendo las mujeres trans quienes enfrentan niveles más altos de violencia dirigida específicamente hacia ellas.
«La vida y trágica muerte de Sara deben ser un catalizador para actuar contra la transfobia y la violencia», añadió Echavarría. «Su memoria nos impulsa a trabajar incansablemente por un mundo donde cada individuo, independientemente de su identidad de género, pueda vivir con dignidad y seguridad».
