TWO Praises NCAA for Supporting Trans Athletes
Our Foes Interested in Playing Cynical Political Games with the Truth, Not Athletes
PHILADELPHIA – Truth Wins Out thanked the NCAA today for pledging to not hold championship sports tournaments in states that have passed laws discriminating against transgender athletes. The NCAA Board of Governors said it “firmly and unequivocally supports the opportunity for transgender student-athletes to compete in college sports.”
“The NCAA’s leadership and commitment to non-discrimination sends a powerful message that there is a price to pay for bigotry,” said Truth Wins Out’s Executive Director Wayne Besen. “Those who push these despicable anti-trans bills are not interested in athletes. Instead, they are playing games with the truth to advance their cynical political aspirations.”
More than two dozen states have attacked transgender athletes, falsely claiming that they have an unfair advantage over the competition. The anti-trans bills have been created by the same hate groups that have targeted gay and lesbian people for discrimination for decades.
“We hope corporations will take a stand and follow the NCAA’s lead,” added Besen. “As a society, we must stand up against opportunistic politicians who divide and distract our nation instead of offering real solutions. This bullying by empty suit right wing lawmakers, who offer the country nothing of substance, must stop.”
In a statement the NCAA wrote: “When determining where championships are held, NCAA policy directs that only locations where hosts can commit to providing an environment that is safe, healthy and free of discrimination should be selected. We will continue to closely monitor these situations to determine whether NCAA championships can be conducted in ways that are welcoming and respectful of all participants.”
According to NBC News, four states, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas and Idaho, have enacted bans; a federal judge stopped Idaho’s law from taking effect in August. South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem signed two executive orders limiting trans athletes’ participation after she vetoed an earlier bill.
Founded in 2006, Truth Wins Out is the oldest nonprofit advocacy organization and educational resource dedicated to monitoring and ending “ex-gay” conversion programs, while working to eliminate anti-LGBTQ prejudice and discrimination. Truth Wins Out also fights against right wing extremism, which is the underlying source of power, money and influence behind “pray away the gay” political campaigns.
