Statement by Executive Director Wayne Besen:

The right wing provocateur and Internet troll, Milo Yiannopoulos, has announced that he’s on the “ex-gay” path. He told the “Christian” news organization Life Site that he is “sodomy free.” Of late, Yiannopoulos had kept a relatively low profile since the Religious Right abandoned him in 2017 after he appeared to support pedophilia. He was disinvited from CPAC, a major book deal was rescinded, his funding dried up and he was deplatformed from social media.

Thrown to the curb, a desperate Yiannopoulos panhandled online for money, while pathetically whining, “I can’t put food on the table.” The flamboyant Trump sycophant has suddenly reemerged, rebranding himself “ex-gay”. Will the Religious Right buy it? Possibly, as their childish gullibility never ceases to amaze.

It is our view that Yiannopoulos is a publicity-seeking circus act trying to revive his imploded career. We will do our best to ignore this tragic stage horse and deprive him of the celebrity oxygen he needs to feed his ego and line his pockets. Still, if even a handful of LGBTQ youth are harmed by his money-grubbing charade and pitiable grope for relevance, Yiannopoulos will be held responsible for the lives he ruins.

Truth Wins Out has spent fifteen years proving that “ex-gay” programs don’t work. In the unique case of Milo Yiannopoulos we wish they did. The straight majority can have him, as he’s done squat for the LGTQ community. TWO has also shown that “ex-gay” charlatans are mostly cranks, creeps and cons. We won’t have much work to do on this front, as Yiannopoulos’ sad little grift is self-evident. We can only hope that Yiannopoulos’ swindle quickly fades, so he can slither away as quickly as he reemerged.

Founded in 2006, Truth Wins Out is the oldest nonprofit advocacy organization and educational resource dedicated to monitoring and ending “ex-gay” conversion programs, while working to eliminate anti-LGBTQ prejudice and discrimination. Truth Wins Out also fights against right wing extremism, which is the underlying source of power, money and influence behind “pray away the gay” political campaigns.
