The Huffington Post writes:
New Hampshire’s largest newspaper on Sunday endorsed former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in the 2012 GOP presidential race, signaling that rival Mitt Romney isn’t the universal favorite and potentially resetting the contest before the state’s lead-off primary Jan. 10.
“We are in critical need of the innovative, forward-looking strategy and positive leadership that Gingrich has shown he is capable of providing,” The New Hampshire Union Leader said in its front-page editorial, which was as much a promotion of Gingrich as a discreet rebuke of Romney.
“We don’t back candidates based on popularity polls or big-shot backers. We look for conservatives of courage and conviction who are independent-minded, grounded in their core beliefs about this nation and its people, and best equipped for the job,” the editorial said.
Really, is this how far the GOP has sunk? The professed party of “family values” backs a serial adulterer who left one of his revolving wives while she was in the hospital recuperating from cancer. What exactly is “conservative” about a man who behaves in such a tawdry manner that lacks even a scintilla of personal responsibility? Why would an avowed social conservative vote for this miscreant, when the man currently occupying the Oval Office is still with his original wife and is, by all accounts, a wonderful father to his children?
Reality check: The religious right has never cared much about real families — just promoting a fake version of 1950’s sitcom families. To this crowd, the word “family” is a public relations gimmick used to veil disapproval of various minority groups — from gays to women to immigrants. In today’s world, the word “conservative” is practically meaningless. Thanks to those who have adopted the label, it has become a synonym for personal power at the expense America’s future.
In terms of Gingrich’s alleged penchant for “ideas,” what has he ever done for humanity — other than issue intellectually empty books that earn the crass opportunist enough money for a revolving credit line for his latest young wife at Tiffany? What idea or paradigm or plan has Gingrich ever dreamed up that amounted to anything?
Newt Gingrich is not that smart — he only looks semi-intelligent because he shares a stage with Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry, and Herman Cain. A drunken Bozo the Clown would look like Einstein competing against these bubble-headed wretches.
Note to so-called conservatives: If you like Gingrich — you lose all credibility and your conservative card. This is a man who talks like Mother Teresa, but lives like Larry Flynt. No one can deny that Gingrich is a reprobate and a phony.
Don’t even try. There is no way to square this circle. You can either support Gingrich or be a social conservative. You simply can’t be both.
