Haha, just kidding. That would be like saying Maggie Gallagher was really a beautiful unicorn!
But this bigot meltdown Alvin found, in response to a simple question about marriage equality, is approximately the same quality of argument we hear from Tony Perkins and Bryan Fischer. The only difference is that I assume that the American Family Association hires college students to edit out all their ALL CAPS nonsense, misspellings, punctuation that isn’t acceptable in English or any other language, ellipses that go on for days, etc.
It’s heartening that our opposition gets dumber every day.
This seems like a good time to highlight something else. I spend a lot of time ridiculing our opposition. Indeed, it’s my favorite part of the job. Wingnuts mistake this, as they always mistake ridicule from liberals, for anger. I find this very funny, just like I find them funny. The reason they make that mistake is simple: it allows them another way to avoid actual arguments, by copping out and saying “lib’ruls are so angry!” The guy above (the one who misspells “lose”) does it when he pats himself on his prickly shoulders and makes jokes which only he finds funny about how “gays” shouldn’t be called “gay” because, in his opinion, it is a “mis-use” of the word, because, as he sees it, we are “unhappy and upset.”
I’m not unhappy or upset. I’m just makin’ fun of the guy.
Amanda talked about this the other day, the misconception that we on the liberal, gay-friendly, feminist side, are always angry:
I try to reserve being pissed the f**k off for emergencies, because being angry all the time causes massive burnout. The reason to make fun of nasty, maddening people instead of just be mad at them all the time is to preserve your own sanity. That it causes them to get so pissed off is just a bonus. It’s especially important to piss off the people who are doing the “I’ll pray for you” passive aggressive s**t, because it just really highlights what giant hypocrites they are.
Amanda then led in to a column by the late Molly Ivins, indeed, the woman whom you can thank for me even sitting here writing right now. I never gave a damn about politics [outside of parroting whatever my parents said] before I discovered Molly, and Molly was a master of ridiculing her ideological opponents, exposing them for what fools they really were. You should read all of it [seriously], but here are some of my favorite parts:
Those who think of freedom in this country as one long, broad path leading ever onward and upward are dead damned wrong. Many a time freedom has been rolled back–and always for the same sorry reason: fear.
So one thing I have learned from Johnny Faulk, Texas, and life, is that since you don’t always win, you got to learn to enjoy just fightin’ the good fight.
So keep fightin’ for freedom and justice, beloveds, but don’t you forget to have fun doin’ it. Lord, let your laughter ring forth. Be outrageous, ridicule the fraidy-cats, rejoice in all the oddities that freedom can produce. And when you get through kickin’ ass and celebratin’ the sheer joy of a good fight, be sure to tell those who come after how much fun it was.
Damn straight. And that is why we call him “Porno Pete.” And that is why we constantly link to Rick Santorum’s website.
It makes us laugh, and despite what that poor moron above thinks, it makes this job fun. You might even say it makes us jolly and GAY.
